CUSTOM MOUTHGUARDS & NIGHT GUARDS
Guard What Matters — On the Field and While You Sleep
Custom-fitted mouthguards for contact sport and night guards for teeth grinding. Protecting young athletes and families across Brisbane's northside — from Joyner and Bray Park to Strathpine, Warner, Lawnton, Cashmere, and Albany Creek.
SPORTS PROTECTION
A Custom Fit That Actually Stays Put
Athletes without a mouthguard are up to 60 times more likely to suffer dental injury. A custom guard — moulded precisely to your teeth — may help reduce that risk while letting you breathe, talk, and drink normally during play.
Mouthguards are recommended from your child’s first sporting season — ask us at their next check-up and clean. Grinding mouthguards (night guards) are also available for patients managing jaw tension. Browse all general dentistry services to see what’s included at each visit.
Custom vs Store-Bought — What the Difference Looks Like
The boil-and-bite guard from the chemist costs less upfront. Here is what that trade-off actually means for protection, comfort, and longevity.
Fit
Precision-moulded from an impression of your teeth — locks in place without biting down
Approximate fit from boiling and biting — stretches the material, creating thin spots
Shock absorption
Multi-layer construction with even thickness at impact zones
Single-layer material thins at contact points where protection matters most
Breathing and speech
Normal breathing and clear speech — designed around your bite
Bulky fit can restrict airflow and muffle speech
Durability
Typically lasts 12+ months with proper care
Degrades within weeks to months — loses shape after repeated use
Braces compatibility
Can be fitted over orthodontic brackets and wires
Cannot safely accommodate braces — may damage hardware
ADA recommendation
Recommended by the Australian Dental Association for competitive and contact sport
Not recommended by the ADA for contact sport
Airway safety
Secure fit — stays in place during impact
Can dislodge during play and pose a choking risk
Price
From $250 (No Gap available for eligible students)
$15–$100 at the chemist
Which Sports Need a Mouthguard?
In Queensland, mouthguards are mandatory for school-level contact sports — and the Australian Dental Association and Sports Medicine Australia support the “No Mouthguard, No Play” policy across all age groups.
Even in sports where mouthguards are not formally required, a single elbow, ball, or fall can mean a cracked tooth, a knocked-out incisor, or a split lip that changes the shape of your smile. A custom guard may help reduce that risk for a fraction of the cost of emergency dental treatment.

School Sport, Braces, and Team Colours
Children should start wearing a mouthguard as soon as they play any sport with facial impact risk — and in Queensland, most school contact sports require one. Because kids’ jaws grow quickly, a new mouthguard is typically needed every sporting season to maintain a proper fit.
Custom mouthguards can be designed to fit safely over orthodontic braces — something boil-and-bite guards cannot do without risking damage to brackets and wires. And because kids are more likely to wear a guard they actually like, we offer a range of colours including team colours and custom designs.
Eligible school-aged children with health fund extras cover may receive their mouthguard at no out-of-pocket cost through our No Gap offer.

TEETH GRINDING & BRUXISM
That Morning Jaw Ache Might Be Telling You Something
Around one in three Australian adults grind or clench their teeth — many without realising it. A custom night guard sits between your upper and lower teeth while you sleep, helping to cushion the forces that can gradually wear down enamel, crack fillings, and strain your jaw joint.
What Happens When Grinding Goes Unaddressed
Teeth grinding generates remarkable force — during sleep, your jaw can exert pressures far beyond what you produce when chewing food. Over months and years, that sustained pressure can gradually wear through enamel, crack existing dental work, and place strain on the jaw joint (the TMJ).
The challenge is that grinding often progresses slowly. A small chip becomes a cracked filling. A cracked filling becomes a crown. The earlier grinding is identified, the simpler and less costly the management tends to be — a custom night guard rather than replacing damaged teeth down the track.
Stress, certain medications (including some antidepressants), high caffeine intake, and disrupted sleep can all contribute to grinding. Your dentist can help identify contributing factors alongside fitting a guard.
Could Any of These Apply to You?
These are common signs your dentist would ask about during an assessment. This is not a diagnosis — it is a starting point for a conversation.
If two or more of these sound familiar, a dental assessment may help identify what is happening. This checklist is educational — only your dentist can determine whether a night guard would benefit you.
How a Night Guard Is Made
Assessment appointment
Your dentist examines your teeth for signs of wear, checks your jaw joint, and discusses your symptoms. If a night guard is appropriate, an impression or digital scan is taken.
Custom fabrication
Your guard is made in a dental laboratory — either a soft guard for milder grinding or a hard acrylic splint for more significant wear. Your dentist recommends the type based on your assessment.
Fitting and adjustment
Your finished guard is checked for fit and your bite is carefully adjusted. You receive instructions on wear, cleaning, and what to expect in the first few nights.
Night Guard Pricing
From $300
Custom hard acrylic splints for moderate-to-severe grinding from $500
- Comprehensive grinding and bite assessment
- Custom laboratory fabrication
- Fitting appointment with bite adjustment
- Care instructions and storage case
Your dentist will recommend the right type of guard based on your assessment. A written treatment plan with itemised costs is provided before any work begins.
Before fitting any night guard, your dentist screens for signs of sleep apnoea — because standard flat guards can affect airway positioning during sleep. If snoring or breathing pauses are identified, your dentist may recommend a sleep study before proceeding. This screening takes a few minutes and helps ensure you receive the right type of guard for your situation.
Care & Longevity
Looking After Your Mouthguard
Clean After Every Use
Rinse with cold water and a soft toothbrush after each use. Avoid hot water — it warps the fit over time. Mild soap is fine; skip toothpaste, it's too abrasive.
Keep It in Its Case
Store in the ventilated hard case provided. Keep away from heat (car glovebox, direct sun) and pets — dogs are notorious mouthguard thieves.
Know When to Replace
Sports guards: every 1–2 seasons or when the surface is worn flat. Night guards: 2–5 years, sooner if you're a heavy grinder. A poor fit means it's time — bring it in.
